Campaign Story

About Visible Climate:

Is the climate changing? The answer is yes but it is fiercely contested, mainly because not everyone can see it happening where they live.

Publicly accessible data is available but very often buried behind log in walls and indecipherable APIs which mean nothing to most people. Then there’s the issue of how climate change is presented to the public at large: through the lens of the media, each outlet having to set coverage of scientific findings against editorial views and while weighing political responses.

The climate belongs to everyone and, in order for the issue to be more broadly understood, accepted, and discussed more rationally at home, the data needs to belong to everyone too – presented without comment and geographically relevant, bringing the reality of human-generated climate change down to a local level.

Visible Climate provides the means to engage people in gathering climate data in the comfort of their own home and provides a place where that data can be collected and presented to all, giving an accurate picture of temperature and humidity at a postcode level over five years. As the climate changes, and micro-climates change with it, this crowdsourced data will provide a wealth of information and a central place people can visit, view, digest, and download the data itself. Free of charge, uncomplicated, and unhidden.

It’s time to bring climate change home because, as the old saying goes, that’s where the heart is and that’s how you win minds.

How Will It Work?

There’s an old principle in data analysis which uses an expletive, but it means “what get you out is only as good as what you put in.” Subsequently, we want to be able to gather standardised readings and have found a simple to use piece of technology of sufficient quality to do just that. The project also relies on you because, without you feeding the data in, there’s nothing to share.

Everyone who supports this project at the recommended contribution will receive a new digital wireless weather station with an outdoor sensor which measures temperature and humidity.

A special link to a form will be sent to these supporters too, which they will be able to fill in anytime they take readings on the meter. This data will then be updated on a public facing page at Cynefin Hedge Fund, showing the gathered data, down to geographical area at the first half of the supporters postcode (the second half won’t even be recorded).

That public facing page, which will build over time, will create a detailed data-table and interactive visual graphs, freely available for download by everyone.

And that’s it. Climate data from your doorstep to the world’s.

Notes:

We will be collecting and presenting data over the next five years, ending on April 27th 2024 and the project will initially be open to new participants until April 27th 2020 – though we reserve the right to change this date.

To make a compelling data story, we have nominally set the “goal” for this project at £120,000 which equates to 3,000 participants over the five year period – though in this instance the financial target is not our primary concern.

This project is only open to participants in the United Kingdom at this time, though we may extend the territory in the future, dependent on cost viability.

Project Costings:

Participant Pledge: £40.00*

Equipment Purchase Price: £32.00 (Est. Max)

Transaction Fee Uplift: £0.00

Transaction Fee: 1.00 (Estimated and platform variable)

Data Portal Administration: £7.00 (2019-2024, £1.40 per annum per supporter)

*Cynefin Hedge Fund reserves the right to change the participant pledge amount in the event of a price change in the equipment.

Fallback Investment and Payments:

At Cynefin Hedge Fund, there is no such thing as a failed project. Most projects feature a fallback option but, because the structure of this research project is slightly different, there is no fallback. For every pledge at the requested amount the equipment will be despatched and the returned data recorded and presented, even it’s one supporter.

As soon as you make a pledge, your payment is processed immediately and transaction fees are incurred. Please only make pledges if you are committed to supporting the Visible Climate project and with the full understanding that physical products are provided by a third party and any warranty issues reside with the manufacturer and not Cynefin Hedge Fund. The equipment is yours once it arrives and is provided as part of this research project in which you are a participant. Provision of data to the project is your own responsibility, so please bookmark the submission form once it is live and, if neccessary, diarise to remind you to take and submit readings.

Rewards:

Cynefin Hedge Fund does not operate a traditional reward system as many other crowdfunding sites do. Rather, you will have access to exclusive content (podcasts, articles, and film) when you are logged in.

Challenges:

The main challenge with this project is uptake. We would like to be able to provide comprehensive, postcode level data covering a broad portion of the UK over the next five years, though the number of supporters and their data returns are beyond our control. We would like to hope we could more than double the number of participants from 3,000 to at least 6,000.
