Campaign Story

About The Wood:

Alms Wood in Haute Vienne is a parcel of 14.7 hectares (36 acres) of established woodland located within thirty minutes of Limoges. It will provide research wilderness, eco-forestry, local biomass grants, and public access to stay on the site.

The property is accessed from a country road via a narrow track which runs a kilometre to an old stone house requiring planning consent (CU) and complete renovation over time. There two smaller outbuildings which have undergone some structural preservation, one containing an old bread oven. Both also require renovation.

The 14.7 hectares (36 acres) of established woodland is mainly to front and side of the property with a couple of smaller plots seperated from the main.

Subject to permissions, the site will be turned into a wilderness reserve, productive eco-forestry business, and also provide eco-friendly accomodation.

We anticipate this forest and its buildings will move in the market relatively quickly due to a price reduction of nearly 100,000 Euro. The British land market just doesn’t offer this amount of space at the same price and we are more interested in the trees, the habitat, and the potential to do something wonderful.

What Will Cynefin Do With The Wood?

Alms Wood will provide an ideal multipurpose site for preservation, research, sustainable living, and restoration. We will restore, renovate, and maintain the wood, as well as creating eco-friendly commercial timber for sale within the Haute Vienne.

The wood will be seperated into purposed lots as follows, each progressing to completion with appropriate permissions.

1: Five acres will be cleared and tidied and will be designated for the production of seasoned logs and biomass to be provided to local communities free of charge. We will manage the trees in a native planting scheme, using a mix of approporiate techniques (i.e. coppicing) to ensure productive new growth and adapt any new planting schemes to the future climate requirements of the region. We will also monitor the success of this future adaptive planting and provide guidance to others.

2: Five acres will be designated as research wilderness, in which the effects of human management-free rewilding on trees, soil, and biodiversity can be permanently studied. Hides and observation platforms will be placed around the wilderness area for the observation of wildlife.

3: Five acres will be designated as the wood and biomass source for the Alms Wood site. The area will be cleared, tidied and designated for the production of seasoned logs and biomass. We will manage the trees in a native planting scheme, using a mix of approporiate techniques (i.e. coppicing) to ensure productive new growth and adapt any new planting schemes to the future climate requirements of the region.

4: Ten acres will be designated as eco-commercial plantation. The area will be cleared, tidied and designated for the production of timber for sale only within the Haute Vienne region. We will manage the trees in a productive native planting scheme, using a mix of approporiate techniques (i.e. coppicing) to ensure productive new growth and adapt any new planting schemes to the future climate requirements of the region. Fall and waste will be used in charcoal production for use on the Alms Wood site.

5: One acre will be designated as the Alms Wood orchard in which mixed, native fruit trees will be planted and harvested for use on site.

6: Ten acres will be designated for visitors, creating a designed and managed woodland which houses four timber lodges and space for ten tents during the summer months. Across the ten acre site will be four woodland shelters which can be used for bushcraft and woodland crafting lessons, eating, or simply quiet contemplation. Fall and waste will be for use on the Alms Wood site, including in charcaol production.

The main house will be renovated, creating functional living space for the site managers. The outbuilding featuring the bread oven will be renovated, reactivating the oven and creating a functional kitchen and space for the site. The second outbuilding will be converted into bathroom facilities. The renovation work will incorporate eco-friendly processes, including insulation and rainwater collection, material recycling from the site, and the addition of solar energy generation to power the main buildings and lighting to the paths and areas of lot 6. The energy efficiency, carbon usage, waste creation, water collection and usage, will all be collated as research data, allowing the overall sustainability of sites such as these to be assessed and and lessons learned for application elsewhere.

Once the site is ready for visitors, supporters of the project will be entitled to preferential bookings on a first-come first-served basis and will also recieve a discounted price on their stays in the Summer. Supporters will also be able to stay on the site for free, subject to availability of space and on a rotated basis for the sake of fairness, between April and June and September and October every year.

On application, access will be granted for academic research throughout the year to students in relevant fields in order to support their work. Accommodation will be provided free of charge in these cases.

Alms Wood will also be used as a seed woodland, supporting new planting projects elsewhere.

The title of the land at Alms Wood will be held by Cynefin Digital Limited and the land will not be sold on for profit or otherwise.

Fallback Investment:

At Cynefin Hedge Fund, there is no such thing as a failed project. Every project has a fall back option, in so far as any project which achieves part of its target but not the whole will nominate a secondary purpose to make sure nothing is wasted.

If this project fails to raise more than 10% of its target, the funds will be allocated to Cynefin Foundation research grants, to be used to support academic work in relevant areas of study. If this project fails to meet its goal but raises more than 10% of its target the funds will diverted to another project in the woodland preservation, research, or sustainable living category. Everything here is transparent, leaving you to make reasoned choices about whether or not to support projects and Cynefin as a whole and, to be blunt, recycling is no bad thing.

As soon as you make a pledge, your payment is processed immediately and transaction fees are incurred. Please only make pledges if you are committed to supporting the Alms Wood project and with the full understanding that if the project fails to meet its target or the wood is sold before the project meets its target, the investment you have made will be “recycled” as set out above.

Rewards:

Cynefin Hedge Fund does not operate a traditional reward system as many other crowdfunding sites do. Rather, you will have access to exclusive content (podcasts, articles, and film) when you are logged in. Additionally, supporters will receive the entitlements to preferential bookings and discounted or free stays as set out above. Where woodland craft products from the site are made and sold online, you will also be entitled to an exclusive discount when you checkout.

Challenges:

The main challenge with this project, as with all Cynefin Hedge Fund projects at this early stage, is that the market moves relatively quickly and it is possible Alms Wood will be subject to an offer before the target is met. If you do support this project, please share it widely to try and accelerate the achievement of the funding goal and help to mitigate this risk.
